Masterclass songwriting
The Art of Song
The Art of Song is a comprehensive 2 or 3-day course on the creation and completion of a song. The seminar includes performances of classic hits and new works by Gino Vannelli. Gino will take the student/listener through a step-by- step analysis and comprehension of his own works and works of other songwriters dating back to Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Gershwin, up to McCartney-Lennon and modern day writers.
Some of the techniques taught are: How to create titles, themes, writing linear, non linear, writing forward, backward, writing music first then scanning lyrics to melody, writing lyrics first, then scanning melody to lyrics, the exploration of poetry, whether free verse or metric verse without consideration of music or confined structure and learning to edit later by extracting key phrases, couplets or quatrains to create the song lyric form. The use of metaphor, and the practice of allowing the listener to discover themes and messages for him or herself by the non-editorial approach to word painting. The importance of a general overview of philosophy, the humanities, history, social and political phenomenon both popular and unpopular, traditional and untraditional religious beliefs, how they play a powerful role in the songwriter’s technique and style. The skills of creating a simple but solid skeletal music frame, then embellishment and character by choice of harmonic substitution, rhythm, wordplay and production considerations.
The class will broach the topic of art versus commerce and how these two combative forces can and often play a constructive role on bettering the songsmith.
The 3-day seminar will include student performances, hands-on critique and guidance by Gino and the production of a demo written and recorded by the class.
